Meet Ernie Yarbrough, a seasoned softball coach, who has been involved with the sport for more than 40 years. He is known as "Coach Ernie" by his students and their parents.
Ernie, was a Vietnam era veteran in the US Navy before an
honorable discharge in 1971.
He then developed keen interest in sports, and officiated in
basketball for 30 years at the high school and college levels, before retiring in 2008.
He coached at the high school and college levels for 22 years in football, basketball, baseball and softball. He was also a high school four-sport letterman (football, basketball, baseball, track), before going on to a successful college football career at San Diego University and California State University in Pomona. He earned a college division All-American honors during his junior and senior years.
As a fast-pitch softball player, he has earned numerous ASA and NSA All-American awards, and has played in 5 ASA and 1 NSA National Championship teams. Ernie was selected to play in the 1979 ASA Pan American Games, and has also played in 13 International Softball Congress World Championship tournaments in four continents.
Ernie has coached State Championship high school teams in
California and Georgia and at the college level for 13 years. He is a recipient of numerous regional and state level coaching awards. Ernie travels throughout the United States conducting pitching lessons during the summers.
At present, he is an Associate Director of the Georgia High School Association - a post he has held since 2002. His responsibilities include Coordinator of Championship Events in Basketball, Softball, and Soccer, Coordinator of Officials and Coaches Rules Clinics, Statewide Evaluation Programs, Development Camps for Sports Officiating, NFHS National Rules Committee Member.
